Minecraft 24w09a

1.20.5 Snapshot

Wednesday, February 28, 2024

The tenth 1.20.5 snapshot, February 28, 2024: item components replaced item NBT, wolf armor was reworked, and the 1.21 experiments got small changes.

24w09a is the tenth snapshot for Minecraft 1.20.5, released on February 28, 2024. That drop shipped in April as Armored Paws. The Tricky Trials features for 1.21 were being tested behind an experimental toggle at the same time, and this snapshot touched those too. Its biggest change, though, meant that any command giving items NBT data in the old syntax stopped working.

Before 24w09a, extra item data lived in a free-form tag field. Now every item type carries a set of default components, and each stack can override them. /give, /item, /loot and /clear take those components in square brackets after the item name, and anything without a component of its own goes into minecraft:custom_data. The game checks component values while parsing, so a mistake makes the command fail right away. With advanced tooltips on (F3+H), an item shows how many components it has instead of how many tags.

Wolf armor changed in the same snapshot. It now protects the wolf from most kinds of damage until its durability runs out and it breaks, the owner can repair it with armadillo scutes while the wolf is still wearing it, and it can be dyed like leather armor. The accessibility settings gained a Menu Background Blurriness option, and the enchantments Infinity, Flame, Multishot, Piercing, Power and Punch now work on both bows and crossbows if they end up on either one.

The 1.21 experiments got small updates: vaults were retextured again to look less like trial spawners, sheared bogged drop two mushrooms, and wind charges from breezes and players lost the randomness in their burst radius. The data pack version went to 33 and 49 bugs were fixed. Minecraft 1.20.5 Armored Paws was released on April 23, 2024.
