1.21.5 Snapshot

Wednesday, January 22, 2025

The third 1.21.5 snapshot, January 22, 2025: new item components for shield blocking, loom patterns and trim materials, plus data-driven cat and frog variants.

25w04a came out on January 22, 2025, as the third 1.21.5 snapshot. There is very little in it you would notice in survival, but data pack authors got a lot. Several behaviors that used to belong to one specific item are now item components that any item can have.

With blocks_attacks, an item can block attacks the way a shield does, with settings for how long you have to hold it before it blocks and how much damage it stops. provides_banner_patterns lets an item go in the pattern slot of a loom, provides_trim_material sets which trim material an item gives in a trimming recipe, and break_sound sets the sound an item makes when its durability runs out. tooltip_display replaced the hide_tooltip and hide_additional_tooltip components and the old show_in_tooltip fields, so hiding parts of a tooltip now happens in one place.

Cat and frog variants became data-driven, and every variant with spawn rules now uses the same system to decide where it appears. The potion entity was split into separate splash_potion and lingering_potion types. SNBT now accepts lists that mix different value types, while the NBT format itself stays the same.

A few changes are visible in game. A crossbow's tooltip lists every charged projectile instead of only the first, a filled map without a map ID no longer shows "Unknown Map", and Kyrgyz was added as a language. Data pack format 64, resource pack format 49, 47 bugs fixed.
