1.21.6 Snapshot

Tuesday, May 6, 2025

The fifth 1.21.6 snapshot, May 6, 2025: a projectile hit margin that grows during flight, a scale cap for happy ghasts, and a rework of shader fog.

25w19a, released on May 6, 2025, is the fifth 1.21.6 snapshot and one of the smallest in the cycle. It is mostly bug fixes and technical cleanup, with one change you can feel when shooting. Projectiles used to have a fixed 0.3 block margin for hitting a target. Now they start with no margin for the first two ticks of flight, and the margin then grows by 0.05 blocks per tick until it is back at 0.3. Shots close to the shooter are more precise, and long shots keep some leeway.

The happy ghast's scale attribute is now capped at 1.0. Larger happy ghasts had made standing on their back unreliable, and several of the 20 bug fixes are about riding them, such as players falling off after reconnecting to a world and jittery movement for passengers who aren't steering.

Resource pack makers have more to check. Shader fog was reworked: FogShape is gone, render distance fog is now cylindrical and environmental fog is spherical. The mob effect sprites were merged into the GUI atlas, and title screen panorama images must now be square and all the same size. One small option for developers: --quickPlaySingleplayer without a world name now opens the last world you played. Data pack format 76, resource pack format 60.
